A newly bought flat with tired walls, a scuffed hallway, timber windows overdue for a coat: as painters and decorators in Croydon, we take on flats and houses all over the borough. Twelve of our MyBuilder reviews are from customers in Upper Norwood, Croydon, South Croydon and Coulsdon.

Painting and decorating for Croydon flats and houses

All twelve are for indoor work, and half are for flats. If you're looking for decorators in Croydon, this is what we take on:

  • Walls, ceilings and woodwork: skirting boards, doors and stairs done with the walls, so the whole room looks finished.

  • Wallpaper: new paper hung, and old paper stripped before anything else goes on.

  • Cracks and tired plaster: made good first, so the new paint doesn't show every line.

  • After damp treatment: making good and repainting once your damp specialist has finished.

  • Timber you'd rather not paint: stained or varnished to bring out the grain.

Our interior painting page covers rooms, woodwork and wallpaper in more detail.

We're a family-run firm, a father, his sons and their team, established in 2007.

Croydon's conservation areas: what to check before you paint

A conservation area is a part of the borough protected for its historic character. Croydon has 21 of them, and three have an Article 4 direction, which removes some of the rights owners usually have to change a building without applying: Chatsworth Road, The Waldrons and Kenley Aerodrome (Croydon Council, checked October 2026).

  • Chatsworth Road

If your home is on Barclay Road, Beech House Road, Chatsworth Road, Coombe Road, Eden Road, Friends Road, Mulgrave Road, Park Lane or Woodstock Road, check the council's map, as only some numbers on each road are inside the Chatsworth Road Conservation Area. There, painting the outside of any building needs planning permission first. Croydon Council's Article 4 direction for Chatsworth Road covers the whole area and came into force on 21 January 2016. It doesn't mean permission will be refused: each application is judged on its merits (checked October 2026).

Outside an Article 4 area, painting the outside of a building normally doesn't need planning permission; our exterior painting page explains the national rule and the application fee.

  • Bare brick, windows and doors anywhere in a conservation area

Croydon Council's general guidance for all its conservation areas says bare brick walls shouldn't be painted, rendered or clad: the brick loses its colour and texture, and damp can follow. It also asks owners not to fit uPVC or aluminium windows in historic buildings. When painting doors, it recommends a colour that respects the character of the area, and it treats regular painting as protection for ironwork against the weather (checked October 2026).

It's guidance, not a ban, but never-painted brick deserves a second thought.

Upper Norwood and Crystal Palace

Seven of our twelve Croydon reviews come from Upper Norwood, on the Croydon side of Crystal Palace. Two of the conservation areas here, each with its own plan, are below; neither has an Article 4 direction, so the Chatsworth Road painting control doesn't apply. What the plans ask for is care with brick and timber windows.

Upper Norwood Triangle

Designated in April 1989, Upper Norwood Triangle borders Bromley's Crystal Palace Park and Lambeth's Westow Hill conservation areas. It has no Article 4 direction, though the council keeps the right to make one. The 2014 Upper Norwood Triangle plan asks owners to keep and repair their timber sash and casement windows, rules out uPVC or aluminium in their place, and says bare brick shouldn't be painted, rendered or clad (Croydon Council, checked October 2026).

Church Road

Church Road's 2015 management plan says the same about bare brick, and adds that painting or rendering it can cause damp and condensation. It doesn't accept uPVC or aluminium in place of original timber windows, and there's no Article 4 direction here either (checked October 2026).

What affects the cost of decorating in Croydon

Decorating prices in Croydon depend on the job: how many rooms and how big, the state of the walls and ceilings, any wallpaper to strip, the woodwork, and whether you'll be living in the home meanwhile.

Outside, access weighs most. If the front is painted from a scaffold on the pavement, Croydon's scaffold licence conditions require Monoflex sheeting while the painting is done, netting on the upper levels, lights at night and 2.44 metres of headroom for people walking underneath. It must go up outside peak hours, though times on residential streets can be negotiated (Croydon Council, checked October 2026). The licence must be in place before any scaffold goes up. What the licence itself costs is on our page for roofers in Croydon, below.

To help us price your job, send a few photos, the number of rooms and whether the house is in a conservation area, using the form on this page or our contact page. Quotes are free, and we come and look at the rooms before we quote.

Questions about painters and decorators in Croydon

Call 020 8249 7303

How much do painters and decorators in Croydon charge?

It depends on the rooms, the preparation the surfaces need and how the outside is reached. Photos of the rooms help us price the job accurately.

What's the difference between a painter and a decorator?

A painter applies paint; a decorator also prepares surfaces, hangs or strips wallpaper and finishes woodwork. As a painter and decorator in Croydon, we do both.

Do you decorate flats as well as houses?

Yes. Half of our MyBuilder reviews from the borough are for flats, from a one-bedroom flat to a Victorian conversion and a two-bed maisonette.

Are you an independent, family-run firm?

Yes: a family business, a father and his sons with their team, registered at Companies House in 2007 as Andrews Building & Decorating Services Ltd.

Do you hang and remove wallpaper?

Yes, both: we hang new wallpaper and strip old paper before redecorating. Two of the Croydon reviews on this page mention wallpaper.
