Why choose one firm for the electrics, the plaster and the paint

  • No second trade for the making good

New cables are chased into walls (run in a groove cut into the plaster) or run under floors, and that leaves plaster and paint to put right. Our own team fills, plasters and repaints, so the room is finished when the work is.

  • Registered, listed and insured

Companies House number 06178781, since 2007; on Checkatrade, verified on MyBuilder and covered for £5 million public liability. Our MyBuilder reviews are mostly for painting and decorating; none so far are for electrical work.

  • A written quote first

We visit free of charge and quote in writing.

Electrical work we take on, and what we don't

We take on planned electrical work in houses and flats. Each type of job has its own page:

  • Inspections

A report on the condition of the whole installation, for owners and landlords: EICR certificates.

  • Faults

Dead sockets, switches that spark, a trip switch that keeps tripping: electrical repairs.

  • New wiring

Part of the house or all of it, and a new consumer unit: house rewiring.

  • Lights

Downlights, pendants, wall lights and lights outside: lighting installation.

  • Showers

Replacing an electric shower with a new one: shower fitting.

  • Offices, shops and blocks of flats

What we don't do: emergency call-outs or same-day visits. Every job starts with a visit and a written quote.

Before any electrical work: Part P and your certificate

Electrical work in a house or flat in England comes under Part P of the Building Regulations. Some of it has to be notified to building control (your council's building control department or a private registered building control approver).

Read moreShow less

All of it should be inspected, tested and certificated to BS 7671, the British Standard for wiring. The rules are in Approved Document P:

  • Notifiable work. A new circuit, a replacement consumer unit (the fuse box), or any addition or alteration to existing circuits in a special location: the space around the bath tap or shower head in a room with a bath or shower, or a room with a swimming pool or sauna heater.
  • Work that isn't notifiable. Additions and alterations outside special locations, and replacements, repairs and maintenance anywhere. It should still be tested and certificated.
  • Outside the house. Part P also covers fixed lights on outside walls, garden lighting and the wiring in sheds and detached garages. They're notifiable only when the work is one of the three above, such as a new circuit.
  • Who signs it off. A registered competent person (an electrician on a competent person scheme) self-certifies notifiable work. Otherwise the installer can appoint a registered third-party certifier (an inspector who checks and tests the work) or, failing that, must tell building control before work begins, and building control certifies it.

In a kitchen the same rules apply: fitting a built‑in cooker isn't notifiable unless it needs a new cooker circuit (see kitchen fitters in Croydon). For what can go near a bath or shower, see bathroom fitters.

A registered competent person should give whoever ordered the work a BS 7671 electrical installation certificate. For notifiable work, they or their scheme also give the occupier a Building Regulations compliance certificate. Keep them: GOV.UK warns that without approval you won't have the certificates you may need when you sell your home.

Ask before work starts which certificates you'll get. You can check an installer by company name on the Electrical Competent Person Register.

What moves the price of electrical work

We price each job after a free visit. What makes the most difference:

  • The size of the job

how many circuits, sockets, switches and lights.

  • The access

cables run under floorboards or above ceilings take longer than surface work.

  • The existing installation

older wiring can mean more work before new circuits are added.

  • Testing and certificates

the inspection, testing and paperwork the job needs.

  • The making good

how much plastering and repainting the walls and ceilings need afterwards.

Your questions about electrical work

Call 020 8249 7303

What does an electrician do?

An electrician installs, tests, inspects and repairs the fixed wiring of a building: the circuits, the consumer unit, sockets, switches and lights. In a home, that runs from one faulty socket to a full rewire.

Can you come out for an electrical fault today?

No. Our electrical work is planned: we visit, quote in writing and book a date, so we don't take on emergency or same-day call-outs. Until then, leave the faulty circuit switched off at the consumer unit (the fuse box) and don't use it; once it's safe, we can visit and quote for the repair and for making good the walls.

Do I need a certificate for electrical work?

You should get one. Approved Document P says all electrical installation work should be inspected, tested and certificated to BS 7671. Notifiable work, such as a new circuit, also needs Building Regulations sign-off: a registered competent person or their scheme gives the occupier a compliance certificate.

How do I check an electrician is registered?

Search for the firm by name on the Electrical Competent Person Register. It lists electricians registered to work in homes in England and Wales with a Competent Person Scheme, authorised by Government to self-certify that their work meets the Building Regulations.

Can you repair the plaster and redecorate afterwards?

Yes. Plastering and decorating are what our own team does, so the chases cut for new cables are filled, plastered and painted without a second firm to book.
