How your new carpet is fitted

For every carpet we take on, we bring in a trusted flooring trade. A good fit comes down to what's underneath and how tight it's laid:

  • Gripper

Thin timber strips with angled pins, fixed around the edge of the room, hold the carpet in place.

  • Underlay

Laid inside the gripper and taped at its joins, it cushions the carpet and helps it wear evenly.

  • Joins

Where a room is wider than the roll, two pieces are joined with seaming tape, away from doorways where possible.

  • Stretching

The carpet is stretched tight onto the gripper, so it doesn't ripple later.

  • Edges

Tucked in at the skirting boards, with a threshold strip where it meets another floor.

Stair carpet fitting, step by step

Stairs take the most wear. Each step gets its own gripper and underlay, and the carpet is pulled tight over the nosing (the front edge of the step), so it doesn't shift underfoot. Turning steps (the angled steps where a staircase turns) and landings are cut to follow their shape.

You can have the stairs carpeted wall to wall or choose a runner that leaves wood showing either side, which our own team can paint or varnish.

What your carpet fitting can include

  • Measuring the rooms and stairs at the free visit.

  • Lifting the old carpet, underlay and staples, if needed.

  • Fitting gripper and new underlay, then laying and stretching the carpet.

  • Threshold strips where the carpet meets another floor.

  • Stairs and landings, where they're part of the job.

Doors and your lease before the carpet goes down

A new carpet and underlay can sit higher than the old floor, so a door may catch on it. Doors that catch are taken off and trimmed at the bottom, and our own team repaints them where the paint is marked.

In a flat, check your lease for rules on floor coverings or underlay before you choose.

Carpet fitted, paintwork put right

  • Decorators in the same firm

Paintwork marked during the fitting can be put right by our own painters and decorators.

  • A company you can check

Registered at Companies House in 2007 (company number 06178781), on Checkatrade and verified on MyBuilder, with £5 million public liability insurance.

What a carpet fitting quote depends on

  • The size and shape

how big the rooms are, and bays, alcoves or extra joins.

  • The stairs

how many steps, any turning steps and landings, and fitted carpet or a runner.

  • What comes up first

    old carpet, gripper and staples.

  • The carpet and underlay

a patterned carpet has to be matched at the joins, which takes longer.

Questions about carpet fitting

Call 020 8249 7303

How much does a carpet fitter cost?

It depends on the size of the rooms, the stairs, what has to come up first and the underlay. We price each job after a free visit and send the quote in writing.

Do I need to remove furniture for carpet fitting?

Yes, the room has to be clear before the carpet goes down. Empty drawers, put away anything fragile, and agree at the free visit how the larger pieces will be moved.

Is it cheaper to install your own carpet?

Only on labour. Carpet has to be stretched tight with tools most people don't own, and joins and stairs are hard to get right. Laid loose, it ripples and wears unevenly.

Can carpet be fitted on a concrete floor?

Yes. The gripper is glued or nailed into the concrete and the underlay goes on top. The floor has to be dry and fairly level, so any damp or unevenness is put right first, as a separate job.
