What our kitchen fitting includes
A kitchen is several trades in one room, and the order they work in decides how long you are without a sink or cooker. We cover every stage of a fit in Croydon.
Marking out and strip-out
Before anything comes out, the new positions of the sink, hob and sockets are marked; then the old units and appliances go.
First fix and plastering
New pipes, cables and any extractor ducting go in before the walls are closed up; then we make good the damaged plaster.
Units and second fix
We fit the units, worktops and sink, and at the second fix the sink, hob, oven and other appliances are connected again.
Splashback, floor and paint
The splashback goes on and the floor goes down, then we paint the walls, ceiling and woodwork to finish the room.

What our written quote covers
A written quote worth comparing lists each part of the work, who supplies the units, worktops and appliances, what is left out and which certificates you get at the end.
The stages of the fit
Strip-out, first fix, plastering, fitting, flooring and decorating, so you can see what a lower price leaves out.
Your units
Which units, worktops and appliances you are supplying, and whether flat-pack units need assembling before they go in.
The certificates
Which certificates you get for the electrical and gas work, such as the electrical installation certificate to BS 7671.
The skip and its permit
How the old kitchen is taken away, and whether a skip on the road needs a Croydon permit and a parking bay suspension.
What affects the cost of fitting a kitchen in Croydon
Beyond the layout and the worktop, which matter on any kitchen, these change a Croydon quote most.
Who buys the units
Buying the units, worktops and appliances yourself changes the price, and flat-pack units take assembly time that rigid ones don't.
Certificated work
A new cooker circuit or consumer unit is notifiable electrical work, and moving a gas hob is work for a Gas Safe engineer.
Taking out a wall
Removing a load-bearing wall for an open-plan kitchen is a structural change; Croydon's building control may require calculations.
Older houses
Uneven walls and floors take more packing and trimming to get the units level and tight to the wall.
The skip
The skip company gets the road permit; in a controlled parking zone the bay is suspended first, and near Selhurst Park it must go on match days.
How we work
- 01
You tell us about the kitchen
Photos of the room, the plan if you have one, and where the units come from.
- 02
We visit and plan the services
We see where the water, waste, gas and power are now and where the new layout needs them.
- 03
You get a written quote
It lists each stage, who supplies what and the certificates you get at the end.
- 04
The skip is booked early
A Croydon road permit needs at least 5 working days' notice before it starts.
- 05
First fix to second fix
Pipes and cables, then plastering, then units and worktops, then the connections, the floor and the paint.
- 06
We hand it over
We go round the finished kitchen with you and pass on the certificates for the work.
Living in your home while we work
You can live at home through a kitchen fit. Most of the disruption comes in two stretches: the strip-out and first fix, then the second fix and finishing.
Kitchen out of action
How long the sink and cooker stay off depends on the stages: a same-layout swap keeps it short, moved services need new pipes and cables first.
Dust, noise and smells
Chasing walls for new cables and cutting the worktop are the dustiest jobs, and the first-fix days the noisiest, before the plaster goes back on.
Children and pets
During first fix, the gas and water are capped and cable ends wait to be connected: keep small children and pets out until the second fix.
Working hours and clean-up
Units, worktops and appliances arrive on set days, so each day's start and finish is agreed with you, and the stairs and hall are cleared at night.
You might also need
A kitchen fit is often the moment to change the rooms around it as well.
Building work
Opening the kitchen into the dining room means taking out a wall and making good; our builders work across Croydon.
Flooring and floor sanding
Laid after the second fix, once the appliances are in place, or the old boards of an open-plan dining room brought back by sanding.
Interior painting
Walls, ceilings, doors and skirting boards in the hallway and rooms off the kitchen, which often look tired beside it.
Bathrooms
A bathroom refit needs the same mix of plumbing, electrics and plastering as a kitchen, so the two can be planned together.

Questions we get asked
Anything else, call 020 8249 7303.
How much should I pay a kitchen fitter?
It depends on what the price covers, so a single figure would mislead you. A labour-only price for fitting the units is a different job from one that also covers the strip-out, gas, electrics, flooring and decorating, and that is what moves the total most.
How long will we be without a sink and cooker?
Usually from the strip-out, when they are disconnected, until the second fix, when they are connected again in the new units. Most people set up a temporary corner with the fridge, a kettle and a microwave for those days.
Can a kitchen fitter install a kitchen I've bought from IKEA, Howdens, B&Q or Wickes?
Yes: units from IKEA, Howdens, B&Q, Wickes or Wren go in the same way as any others, though flat-pack units have to be assembled first, which adds labour that rigid units don't need. Measuring the room before you order makes sure they fit around the walls, pipes and sockets.
Who can disconnect and reconnect a gas hob or cooker?
Anyone paid to do gas work in a home must be a Gas Safe registered engineer. Disconnecting and reconnecting a free-standing cooker on a bayonet or other self-sealing connector, for example to clean behind it, doesn't count as gas work.
Do I need building regulations approval for kitchen electrics?
Only for some of it: under Part P, a new circuit, such as a new cooker circuit, or a new consumer unit (the fuse box) has to be notified to building control. If the electrician is registered with a competent person scheme, they notify it for you and give you a certificate within 8 weeks of completion.
Does a new kitchen need an extractor fan?
When a kitchen is refurbished, Part F expects any extractor fan or cooker hood that vents outside to be kept or replaced; if the room had none, you don't have to add one, unless the work leaves the room less compliant than before. A recirculating hood on its own does not count as ventilation under Part F.
How do I choose a good kitchen fitter in Croydon?
Check the trades first: the back of a Gas Safe engineer's ID card lists the gas work they are qualified for, and electricians can be looked up on the Electrical Competent Person Register. Then compare written quotes line by line and ask which certificates you will get when the work is finished.
Is there help with the cost of adapting a home in Croydon?
Croydon Council's means-tested Disabled Facilities Grant pays up to £30,000, including fees, planning costs and VAT, for adaptations that help a disabled person stay in a private or housing association home, among them a stair lift to reach a kitchen. An occupational therapist assesses what is needed first, and Croydon will not give a grant for work started before it approves the application.
Are there loans for home repairs in Croydon?
Croydon offers interest-free home repair loans of up to £4,000 for minor repairs and safety measures, to people over 60 or with a disability who own their home or have a long-term right to live in it. They are means-tested, and a surveyor checks that the work qualifies.
