Painting and decorating services for your home, inside and out
Most of what we do is painting and decorating, in houses and flats alike, whether it's a single bedroom or the whole place. Each service has its own page:
Inside
Walls, ceilings, stairs and banisters, with cracks filled and bare wood primed first. See interior painting.
Outside
Painted brick, render, fascias, sash windows and front doors, repaired and primed before the top coats. See exterior painting.
Wallpaper
New paper hung on a prepared wall, old paper stripped and the plaster made good: wallpapering.
Doors
Front and internal doors painted, stained or varnished: door painting.
Kitchen units
Tired cupboard doors given a new colour without a new kitchen: kitchen cabinet painting.

What a painter and decorator's quote depends on
We price each job after a free visit. What moves the cost most:
The size
how many rooms, how big, and how high the ceilings and stairwell walls are.
The condition of the surfaces
sound paint needs a wash and a light sand; cracked plaster, flaking paint or old wallpaper need more.
The finishes
doors, frames, skirting boards and banisters take longer than flat walls, and a big change of colour needs more coats than a refresh.
The access
outside, a scaffold or tower for the upper floors and, if it stands on the pavement, a temporary highway licence from the council, as Bromley requires.

Painting the front of your house: what South London councils control
Painting the outside of a house usually needs no planning permission, and our exterior painting page covers the national rule. The exceptions are local, mostly in conservation areas (where the council protects a street's character), so check your street before choosing a new colour:
Lewisham: Forest Hill and Culverley Green
In parts of Forest Hill and in Culverley Green (Catford), Article 4 directions (orders that take away the right to make some changes without permission) cover painting the outside of a house where it can be seen from the street, an open space or a waterway.
Lewisham: Perry Vale
Here the direction covers any outside painting. These directions apply only to houses lived in as a single home (Lewisham's Article 4 page).
Dulwich Village
Southwark's appraisal says painting or rendering brick that has never been treated “is usually considered unacceptable”, while regular repainting of woodwork doesn't need authorisation (Dulwich Village appraisal).
Greenwich
Royal Greenwich has 23 conservation areas, and six of them have Article 4 directions; check the council's list before painting a front there.
Bromley and Croydon
Their conservation areas are covered on the two borough pages above.
If you live in a conservation area, mention your street when you ask for a quote.
Other work we do alongside decorating
Walls that need more than filling: plastering, so the wall is sound before we paint.
A bigger project: home renovations, where the decorating is the last stage of the build.
Period windows: sash window repair, before the frames are painted.
Offices, shops and blocks of flats: commercial decorators.
Questions about painters and decorators
Call 020 8249 7303
What do painters and decorators do?
They prepare surfaces and apply the finish: filling and sanding walls, priming bare wood, then painting walls, ceilings, woodwork and exteriors, and hanging or stripping wallpaper. Most of the work, and most of the time, goes into the preparation.
Do we have to move out while you decorate the house?
No. We decorate a house room by room, so you can keep living in it while we work. How long it takes depends on the number of rooms, the filling and sanding they need and the drying time between coats.
Can you repair the walls before you paint?
Yes. Filling and small repairs are part of the preparation, and where a wall or ceiling needs more than filling, we repair it before the decorating starts, so you don't need a second firm.
Do you take on emergency or same-day work?
No. We plan each job after a visit, so we don't offer emergency or same-day call-outs. If something urgent like a leak has damaged a ceiling, have the cause fixed first, then ask us to repair and redecorate.
