Hanging new paper, from lining paper to murals

The papers we hang:

  • Lining paper, a plain base for uneven older walls.

  • Vinyl papers, wipeable, for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways.

  • Non-woven papers, which don't stretch when wet and go on a pasted wall.

  • Heavy and textured papers, embossed papers with a raised pattern, often painted once hung.

  • Murals and feature walls, set out from the centre so the design sits right.

Patterns are matched length by length and cut cleanly at corners and skirting boards. We paper ceilings too.

Stripping old paper

Old paper comes off with water or a steamer, from walls and ceilings alike. Painted-over and vinyl papers are scored or peeled first, so the water reaches the paste.

Stripping often shows what the paper was hiding, such as cracks or loose plaster, and our own team repairs it before anything new goes up. Where the plaster is rough across a whole wall, plaster skimming gives a smooth base.

Textured ceilings aren't always paper: the HSE warns that Artex-type coatings in homes built or refurbished before 2000 may contain asbestos, so they aren't stripped like paper. See artex removal.

Mould behind the paper

A musty smell with no visible mould can mean mould on the back of the paper, and peeling paper can be a sign of damp.

Government guidance for landlords notes that removing wallpaper where mould may be growing can release a significant amount of mould spores, so protective equipment should be worn, and that removing surface mould alone won't stop it coming back.

So the cause, such as a leak or condensation, is dealt with first. Then our own team strips the paper, makes good the plaster and redecorates.

What's included in a wallpapering job

  • Old paper stripped and the paste washed off.

  • Cracks filled, loose plaster repaired and the wall sanded.

  • The wall sized (sealed with diluted paste so the paper slides into place) or primed, and lined where it needs it.

  • The new paper hung, matched and trimmed.

Rather paint than re-paper? We strip, make good and paint in the same job: see interior painting.

What sets the price of wallpapering

We price each job after the visit. What moves the cost:

  • The area

how many walls, how high, and any ceilings or stairwell.

  • What comes off first

layers of old or painted-over paper, and repairs.

  • The paper

heavy papers, murals and large pattern repeats take longer and use more rolls.

  • Lining

whether the wall needs lining first.

Questions about wallpapering

Call 020 8249 7303

Can you wallpaper over old wallpaper?

It's best not to. New paste can soften the old paper and lift it in bubbles, so we strip it and make good the wall first.

Do I need lining paper?

Not always. A good paper can go straight onto a sound, smooth wall. Lining helps on uneven or patched plaster and under thin papers, where flaws would show.

Where do you start when wallpapering a room?

From a plumb line, a weighted string that gives a true vertical, not from a corner, since few walls are perfectly straight. A bold pattern or a feature wall is usually set out from the centre, so the design sits evenly on both sides.

Do you paste the wall or the paper?

Paste-the-wall papers go on a pasted wall; traditional papers are pasted on the back and left to soak first. The label says which.

Can you paint over wallpaper?

Lining paper and paintable textured paper, yes, if firmly stuck down. Patterned or vinyl paper is better stripped: paint holds poorly on it and the seams can lift.
