Builders in Croydon
In Croydon's Chatsworth Road Conservation Area, even a porch, a new front fence or paving over the front garden needs planning permission before work begins. As builders in Croydon, we take on small building jobs and full refurbishments, and find out what your road allows before we price anything.

Why choose us as building contractors in Croydon
Your street checked first
Article 4 roads and skip restrictions are looked at when we quote, not discovered halfway through.
Built, then finished
Plastering and painting are our own trade, so the rooms are made good and decorated by the same firm.
Easy to look up
Registered at Companies House since 2007, verified on MyBuilder and listed on Checkatrade, so you can check us first.
Building work we take on in Croydon
One room or the whole house, organised by us from the first visit to the final coat:
small building works and repairs around the house;
full refurbishment of a house, flat or maisonette;
plastering, patching and making good after alterations;
new floors laid as part of a wider job;
plumbing and electrical work where the project needs it.
What a building job involves, and the hours each council allows for noisy work, Croydon's included, are on our builders page.
How it works
Send us the details. Your street, a few photos and what you want changed.
We come and look, then quote in writing. The visit and the written quote cost you nothing.
The work, then the finish. We do the building work, then plaster and paint so the rooms are ready to use.
Check before you start: Croydon's street, skip and loan rules
These Croydon rules decide what you can do and what it costs:
Chatsworth Road Conservation Area
Since 21 January 2016, extending or altering a house, adding a porch, laying paving or a hard driveway, changing a gate, fence or wall, or making a new access to the road all need planning permission. The same direction also covers roof alterations, solar panels and exterior painting (Croydon Council's Chatsworth Road Article 4 page).
Numbers 5 to 23, The Waldrons
Here only two things are caught: hard surfaces within the grounds, and gates, fences and walls (The Waldrons Article 4 page). A planning application has its own council fee and comes before any work.
Who books the skip permit
Only the skip company can apply, with five working days' notice; late applications are refused and the fee is kept (Croydon Council's skip permit page, checked October 2026; its licence fees page gives the current fee).
Where a skip can't sit
Never on the A22, A23 or A232 red routes, which TfL controls; in a controlled parking zone, only in a bay with a suspension or dispensation; and off the roads near Selhurst Park on Crystal Palace home match days. London Road and Whitehorse Lane are among 13 restricted roads (the council's skip restrictions, checked October 2026).
What the skip must meet
An amber lamp on each corner at night, collection within two working days of being full, and no bigger than 5 by 2 metres unless authorised.
Own a flat?
Flats and maisonettes are 43.5% of Croydon's homes (VOA, March 2026). Read your lease before planning any building work.
Help with repair bills
The council's interest-free Home Repair Loans go up to £4,000 for owners over 60 or with a disability, for minor repairs and safety measures; Home Investment Loans go up to £30,000 for homes in serious disrepair and are means tested. Staying Put, the council's home improvement agency, can advise (Croydon Council's page on loans for repairs, checked October 2026).
A scaffold over the pavement is a separate council licence (or one from TfL on a red route): see Roofers in Croydon.
Building work in Croydon: what moves the price
Each job is priced after a visit. The cost moves most with:
Scope: what changes, and what turns up once floors or walls are opened.
Planning: the wait and the council fee if your road falls under an Article 4 direction.
The skip: whether the permit is part of the skip hire, and any parking bay suspension.
Waste: how much has to go.
Access: with no side way, everything is carried through the house.

Questions about builders in Croydon
Call 020 8249 7303
What's the difference between a builder and a building contractor?
Very little in everyday use. 'Building contractor' usually means the firm that signs the contract and coordinates the trades; 'builder' covers anyone from a sole trader up.
How do I find a decent builder in Croydon?
Compare written quotes for the same scope, read dated reviews in full and look the firm up on Companies House: choosing the best builder for the job gets much easier.
Do you take on small building jobs in Croydon?
Yes. If you need a small builder in Croydon, small building works are part of what we do, along with plastering and flooring.
Do I need planning permission for building work in Croydon?
It depends on the work: many smaller changes are permitted development. In the Chatsworth Road Conservation Area and at 5 to 23 The Waldrons, fences, walls and paving need permission too.
Can I stay in the house while the work is done?
Often, yes. If the kitchen, the only bathroom or the water is off for a spell, moving out for part of the job can be easier.
